The Local Competition Section is divided into the Student Division and the Open Division. The participating teams of the Student Division are nominated by local universities/tertiary education institutions. The Open Division invites local young filmmakers aged 35 years or under to submit applications for selection. Participating teams will produce a narrative short film of not more than 30 minutes.

To enhance the skill and practical experience of fledgling filmmakers, local renowned film veterans are invited to conduct training workshops and share their experiences with the participants on topics such as creative process and cinematic techniques. This year’s mentors include Mr. Chan Hing Kai, Mr. Soi Cheang, Mr. Felix Chong, Mr. Dante Lam, Mr. Lawrence Lau, Mr. Alan Mak, Mr. Pang Ho Cheung, Mr. Herman Yau and Mr. Yau Nai Hoi.

Competition and Awards

Three local, Asian and European film experts will be invited to form an adjudication panel for the Competition. In both Divisions, participants will compete for the Best Film, Best Creativity, Best Script and Best Cinematography Awards. All 8 awardees in both Divisions will compete for the grand prize – Fresh Wave Award. The awardee of Fresh Wave Award will be recommended to participate in the Berlinale Talent Campus in the Berlinale International Film Festival, or its international counterpart. The other seven awardees will have the opportunity to visit Asian, American or European international film festivals with similar capacity.
