The Beginning of Fresh Wave
With a vision to cultivate new film talents, the renowned film director Mr. Johnnie To Kei-fung, Chairman of Film and Media Arts Group of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) initiated the “Fresh Wave Short Film Competition” (Competition) in 2005. The aim of the Fresh Wave is to discover and nurture young filmmakers through training, production, competition and screening. The Competition provides them a platform to create and screen their works. It is hoped that this experience will help them become a new generation of professional filmmakers.
The past four Competitions have been recognised by young filmmakers of the community and tertiary institutions as an important platform for showcasing their films. The increasing number of participants each year has become an important factor for the HKADC to further develop this project. The idea of organising an international short film festival has evolved with an aim to increase public screening opportunities and foster international exchange between local and international young filmmakers.
In 2010, the project is renamed as “Fresh Wave 2010 – International Short Film Festival” which comprises the “Local Competition Section” (previously as the 5th Fresh Wave Short Film Competition) and the Festival.
