Should Taratino take the blame? Chubby works at a video rental, carrying out routine duties together with his petite colleague day in day out. Gang members come to collect “security fees” and leave behind a few threatening words. The incident makes Chubby decide to take some action to change his life. He buys a pistol and practices shooting at home – like Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. He goes into a karaoke to seek revenge – like Chow Yun-fat in A Better Tomorrow. Problem is: the real world is NOT the same as the movie world.

Ming’s most coveted title is probably “Captain, Guarding Team of Literary Public Toilets in Hong Kong”. He draws a map showing all the public toilets in Hong Kong. He keeps literature in the water closets. He does not get along with his family and colleagues. His world is like a world of suppression depicted in a Polanski film. He sees that his neighbor, a young woman, is very lonely and quietly he puts a copy of Mrs. Dalloway by her side to keep her company. Ming may appear to be a weird fetish, but his unusual actions are guided by pure kindness and romance.

In the future, men can produce eggs and women can produce sperms. Same sex marriage becomes the majority while heterosexuality is considered abnormal. Fung and Yan flee to Japan because there is a pawnshop in Kyoto where they can use “the present” as collateral in exchange for “the past”, when they can be lovers in a society that accepts heterosexuality. If this sounds absurd, think about how absurdly homosexuality is treated in the present world.

A mistake at the hospital cost a life and a young woman sits on the rooftop and wants to kill herself. Who is to be blamed? The rigid system or indifferent people? For Ng Ho Yin, there is no simple explanation. Adopting a bold approach, he reconstructs the incident in an unconventional order to highlight different individuals’ personal experience. By doing so, he is also posing a critique on the collective mentality of witch-hunting.

Nerdy Wing walks pass a basketball court and is hit unconscious by a ball. When he wakes up, Wing finds himself in the company of three gang members. They are not a gang of bullies; their mission is to get out and help those in need. Wing joins the gang and suddenly his life is more fulfilled. Wing even suggests that the gang should be more involved in social issues, but the suggestion is turned down because the other members believe that they should remain apolitical. This film, obviously inspired by the Anti-Rail Link movement, explores the dilemma of young people standing at the crossroad, wondering whether or not to take actions.

Due to the one-child policy in China, Xian Xian has a rather lonely childhood. Either she listens to her mother’s nagging, or she goes to play with her friend Fang Bo at deserted railways and factories. Those who were born in the 90s and have experienced drastic socio-economic changes over the years will find this film very relatable. Out of a sense of insecurity, Xian Xian develops a habit of stealing things that she is emotionally attached to. Zhang Duangyang does not give a clear judgement on whether this reflects twisted values or a child’s innocent mind; he is simply showing us a glimpse of the 20th century through his point of view.
